A small object in a rice field, schoolboys who tried to keep it, and an enduring story. Japanese material helps separate memories of the encounter, drawings of the object and a reconstruction often mistaken for an original photograph.

Historical dispute

The military first announced the recovery of a flying disc, then attributed the debris to a balloon. Later records connected it to Project Mogul, while the conflicting announcements made Roswell the defining case of the field.

Unidentified targets appeared on radar over two weekends and were also reported visually. Temperature inversion was offered as a partial explanation.
