The night without a camera
Caponi said that on May 9 he heard guttural sounds near his home in Pretare, a small village beneath Monte Vettore. He first thought he was looking at a cat, an injured animal or a sack left on the ground. When he touched it with his foot, he said, a small figure emerged and fled. He had no camera that night. This is his later account of the opening encounter, without a second witness or a record from the scene.
Two photographs reached the press
On May 24, according to the chronology preserved in case publications, Caponi saw the figure again and carried a Polaroid 660. He took two photographs. Later reviews record publication by Il Messaggero on July 1 and the weekly Stop on July 17. July 1993 was therefore the public breakthrough for the case, not the date of the first encounter.
The figure changed across the images
In photographs attributed to August and September, the figure does not always look the same. Some show it wrapped or crouched, while others appear to show a smooth head, dark eyes and two tube shaped structures on the chest. Caponi interpreted the sequence as stages in one creature's development. The images show differences in appearance, but do not establish a living body or the same subject in every frame.
How Caponi described it
In a detailed interview Caponi described a figure about 70 centimetres tall, hairless, with a smooth round head, fixed dark eyes, no visible ears, small arms and powerful legs. He also mentioned two cords or tubes on its chest. These are the witness's words. The quality of public copies does not allow every detail to be confirmed from the photographs alone.
The dates do not align perfectly
Sources agree that the story began on May 9 and that the first two photographs were taken on May 24. The later chronology is less stable. One date appears as August 10 or 11, another as August 19 or 20, and the final image is assigned to September 2, September 20 or even October. The disagreement does not erase the photographs, but it weakens a precise reconstruction of their sequence.
What was actually examined
Case reviews say investigators from Italy's national UFO centre examined copies of the photographs. A critical account attributed to the centre's researchers questioned the figure's rigidity and differences in the scene between two consecutive images. Polaroid was also reported to have addressed a proposed chemical defect, saying such a defect should recur in the same place in the frame. That statement does not certify that the figure was a creature. It concerns only one proposed chemical explanation.
Police took the photographs
Later publications say police seized material and questioned Caponi under a law concerning public alarm. The same accounts say the proceeding ended in May 1994 without a conviction. What remains in the file
Six disputed images remain, together with Caponi's interviews, his book and a later documentary. Missing are open files of the original photographs, a complete laboratory report, a chain of custody and another witness to the encounters. The file does not prove contact with a nonhuman creature, but it is more than a story without visual material. The unresolved question is simple and difficult: what did Caponi place or encounter before his Polaroid camera.
