The Tehran intercept

Fighter pilots reported a bright object and instrument failures while approaching it. A U.S. intelligence memo documented the event.

Two F-4 intercepts

In the early hours of 19 September 1976, civilians in Tehran's Shemiran district reported a large flashing light. A duty officer at Mehrabad tower saw it and ordered an interception. The first F-4 crew reported losing instruments and communications roughly 25 nautical miles from the object. A second jet, commanded by Major Parviz Jafari, acquired a radar target with a return he compared to a KC-135 tanker.

The smaller object and the failed weapons panel

Jafari said a smaller luminous object emerged and moved rapidly towards his aircraft. When he prepared an AIM-9 missile, the weapons panel and radio failed, returning after he turned away. He later saw another light descend towards the ground, but a helicopter search the following day found no craft. A U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency memorandum preserved the timeline, radar report and aircrew testimony.
