# The United States has said it publicly for the first time: the Space Force operates weapons in orbit

The Air Force secretary and Space Force chief said this week that American weapons are already operating in orbit. Their speeches place space alongside the aircraft, ships and ground forces that depend on it.

## Two speeches, the same wording

On September 14, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink said the United States had space control weapons in orbit capable of defending the Joint Force against hostile action.

One day later, Chief of Space Operations Gen. Douglas Schiess repeated the point at the Air, Space and Cyber Conference in Maryland. Guardians, he said, now operate weapons in orbit that can defend the Joint Force against attacks that rely on space capabilities.

The sentences also appeared in official Air Force and Space Force releases. Both leaders described operations in the present tense. For readers following military space programs, that is the news: the people leading the service publicly described a capability already in use.

## What a space control weapon can mean

Space control means being able to use space systems while interfering with an adversary’s use of its own. Alongside physical damage to a satellite, it can include action without a collision or explosion: disrupting communications, interfering with a satellite's ground link, denying sensors, cyber operations or temporarily preventing an adversary satellite from performing its mission.

Schiess also referred in his speech to an electronic warfare unit conducting nonkinetic fires. The example shows how broad the military term is: interrupting communications or disrupting a sensor can also count as using a weapon. Schiess discussed the unit separately, without identifying it as the orbital capability.

## What was not disclosed

The official releases do not identify the systems. They provide no program name, manufacturer, satellite count, orbital altitude or deployment date. Nor do they say whether the weapons target other satellites, protect American assets or act against the ground infrastructure that operates space systems.

## Space is already connected to every battlefield

Modern forces rely on satellites for navigation, communications, intelligence, missile warning and timing. A system capable of interrupting some of those links can affect aircraft, ships and ground forces without striking them directly.

That explains Schiess's emphasis on defending the Joint Force. Protecting a satellite also preserves the services it supplies thousands of kilometres below: communications between a headquarters and a ship, information reaching an aircraft, and warning that gives troops time to prepare.

## Why acknowledge it now

Meink and Schiess described a space environment in which adversaries are developing ways to disrupt, damage or destroy American systems. Schiess made arming and growing the service one of his three priorities, alongside building a professional ethos and integrating space power at scale.

The message also serves deterrence. A system kept entirely secret cannot shape an adversary's calculations. A general acknowledgement can signal that a response capability exists without revealing how it works or where it is located.

## The line between defense and offense

Both officials framed the weapons as defensive. In space, that distinction is not always simple. A system that can block a sensor threatening U.S. forces may also prevent an adversary from using the sensor for other purposes. A satellite that approaches another spacecraft for inspection or assistance can also create suspicion that it is able to interfere with it.

The question is how a capability is used. The same device can protect one force by interfering with another. The military’s definition of the mission therefore matters alongside the equipment itself. These speeches emphasised protection of the Joint Force.

## Connecting the statement to a system

Budget documents, procurement contracts, program names and orbital tests are places to look for the next development. They could connect the words spoken at the conference to a particular system, its manufacturer or the unit operating it. Each would supply a different part of the picture: a budget shows where money goes, a contract describes what is purchased, and a test may show which operation was tried.

The next useful release would link one of those details to the weapons Meink and Schiess described.

## Sources and context

Senior U.S. officials publicly said that the Space Force operates space control weapons in orbit. They described their role as defending the Joint Force against hostile action enabled by space capabilities.

The systems, their number, their orbits and their mechanisms were not disclosed. Officials did not say whether the capability is kinetic, electronic, cyber, based on sensors or a combination of these.
