**Work type:** Source analysis and news update

# Luna presents a coin she says belongs to an FBI UFO unit

Representative Anna Paulina Luna showed congressional reporter Matt Laslo a challenge coin that she said was minted by the FBI's UFO team, identified on the coin as the Special Investigations Group. The report gives a name and visual identity to a team mentioned in earlier congressional briefings, but the FBI has not publicly confirmed the unit's name, structure or authority.

## At a glance

**What is known:**

Matt Laslo published a recording and photographs of a coin presented by Luna.

**The claim or interpretation:**

Luna attributed the coin to an FBI UAP unit.

**What remains open:**

A coin is not an organisational record; the name and remit need separate verification.

## A small coin gives a name to a nearly nameless team

For more than a year, members of Congress have referred to an FBI team examining reports and material connected to UFOs, while the public knew almost nothing about how the team described itself. In an interview recorded on September 1, Ask a Pol UAP reporter Matt Laslo photographed a challenge coin presented by Anna Paulina Luna. She said members of the FBI team had created it. The front bears the words Special Investigations Group, while the reverse uses imagery of an anomalous object above Earth. Laslo published the article and photographs on September 3.

## What the report actually verifies

Laslo's photographs verify that Luna possessed and displayed a coin carrying the group name and UAP imagery. The audio documents how she described its origin. That makes the report a direct account from the chair of the House Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets. It does not, by itself, establish that the phrase is the formal nationwide title of a permanent FBI unit. Challenge coins can be commissioned by a team, office or group of employees without the name appearing on a public organisational chart.

## The reported team did not appear from nowhere

The new element is the name and the coin, not the broader claim that an FBI UAP team existed. In May 2025, Representative Eric Burlison told Ask a Pol that people on the FBI's UAP team had personally seen anomalous objects and that the Bureau held videos not possessed by AARO. He referred again to congressional conversations with members of the unit after a Wall Street Journal report in June. Luna also contrasted other agencies' work favourably with AARO after lawmakers received briefings and viewed material. Those statements do not authenticate the videos, but they provide a documented history independent of the newly photographed coin.

## Why the FBI would be involved with UFOs

Luna and Burlison describe a team handling UFO material. The publication supplies no document defining its authority or explaining why particular cases reached the FBI. The coin cannot establish which investigations it conducted or what it found.

## What the coin does not prove

A coin is not evidence of a recovered craft, non human material or hidden biological findings. It does not establish that the group remains active in the same form. Until the FBI provides a document, a response or direct testimony from unit personnel, Special Investigations Group should be described as the name disclosed by Luna, not a formally confirmed fact. The caution matters because the phrase is generic and is also used by unrelated investigative organisations.

## The records that should be requested next

Establishing the group's status requires an organizational document or FBI confirmation of its formation, reporting structure and case types. The publication also does not explain the source of the coin's imagery.

## The name on Luna’s coin

Laslo's linked recording preserves how Luna describes the coin. Her words and his photographs are the available source for Special Investigations Group; separate FBI confirmation has not been published.

## Sources and context

Matt Laslo published an article, audio and photographs on September 3, 2026 showing a coin presented by Luna. The coin bears the words Special Investigations Group and UAP imagery. Luna and other lawmakers had previously described briefings from an FBI team dealing with UAP.

No public FBI document identifies the Special Investigations Group as its UAP unit. Its place in the Bureau, staffing, budget, remit and current status remain unknown. The coin's chain of custody is based on Luna's account and Laslo's documentation rather than independent FBI confirmation.
