# One target, three versions: what changed in the video processing

An infrared video preserved on a classified network keeps an area of contrast near the centre of the sensor for several minutes. A title added to the file claimed possible shape changes, but the footage had been stabilised, sharpened and contrast enhanced before investigators received it. We compare its three layers to separate what is visible from what processing may create.

## One event in three versions

The video is not one simple sequence. It begins with a short version accelerated eight times, stabilised and enhanced. Next comes five minutes at original speed with stabilisation, sharpening and contrast changes. A final five minute section is described as the original clip. This structure supports comparison, while showing that the most dramatic view is not raw imagery.

## What the recording actually shows

An area of contrast remains near the centre as the sensor tracks it. Its boundary sometimes appears to expand, contract or become asymmetric. Elsewhere the entire picture loses quality and the sensor cycles through contrast modes. The recording shows a target followed over time, but does not by itself measure a physical object changing its structure.

## How stabilisation can alter an edge

Stabilisation shifts every frame to hold a target in place. Sharpening strengthens transitions between light and dark, while contrast enhancement can turn weak noise into an apparently solid line. When a target is small and blurred, minor focus or sensitivity changes alter its silhouette. Each moment must therefore be compared with the less processed section rather than judged from the accelerated clip alone.

## File length is not event duration

Ten minutes and forty eight seconds is the released file's length, including repeated presentation of the same sequence. DVIDS describes an original speed processed version and a segment labeled original clip, each lasting roughly five minutes. Their lengths must not be added into ten minutes of continuous tracking.

## Why the archive leaves it open

The archive presents the video as received and explicitly notes both prior digital alteration and the weak chain of custody affecting some files recovered from the classified network. That does not erase the footage. It defines the boundary of the evidence: we know where the file was found and what it displays, but cannot securely reconstruct its path from sensor to public video.

## Compare the same moment in both versions

The linked DVIDS record allows the same moment to be compared in the sharpened version and the segment labeled original. That can reveal outline changes caused by processing, but does not supply the unreleased sensor data.

The tracking duration was corrected. The 10 minute 48 second file presents the footage in three versions. DVIDS describes each version at original speed as about five minutes; their durations cannot be added together as continuous tracking.

AARO assesses that the imagery was probably derived from an infrared sensor on a US military platform operating in the Indo Pacific Command area. The file was uploaded to a classified network in June 2024 and released publicly in May 2026 as DOW UAP PR058. It runs for ten minutes and forty eight seconds.

The chain of custody is not substantiated. The platform type, precise location, range, telemetry and raw file preceding the edits have not been released. It is therefore impossible to determine whether the outline changes in the target, the sensor conditions or the stabilisation and sharpening process.
